Monday 16 March 2026 – Protecting All Children from Ritual Genital Cutting
Doors open at 7pm, talk starts at 7.30pm
Speaker: Dr. Alejandro Sanchez, Human Rights Lead, National Secular Society

Amid recent controversies surrounding both female genital mutilation and non-therapeutic male circumcision, National Secular Society human rights lead Dr. Alejandro Sanchez makes the legal, medical and ethical case for protecting all children from ritual genital cutting.
Dr Sanchez has been on the BBC Radio recently and is a formidable opponent of this practice. He was talking to Rabbi Jonathan Romaine, who defends male circumcision. Little boys have died from this procedure. Whilst less brutal than Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), Dr Sanchez will not shy away from exposing the horrors of the mutilation of a small boy’s body. Astoundingly, circumcision on boys in the UK is not regulated – anyone can do it!
FGM is a critical issue in the UK, especially when carried out on girls who reside in UK, but sent back to Africa during the Summer break in order to be ‘cut’. If their parents or others are caught, they will face prison sentences. In Somalia, 97% of girls are cut!
Evidence of circumcision dates from the Stone Age, long before the origins of the religions that today encourage it. The practice will likely continue for as long as people embrace ignorant cultural demands. Medically trained speakers like Dr Sanchez shine a light on this difficult topic, to ensure it remains part of public debate.
