Please note the change of day – we are now meeting on a Monday!
Monday 20 October 2025 – “The Future of Science without the use of animal experimentation” Doors open 7:00pm, starts 7:30pm
Speaker: Antonia Gee, Animal Aid activist.
This is a critical topic for Humanist who tend to value scientific research, and also ascribe value to all forms of sentient life; the use of animals for medical research has always been controversial. Humanism tends to attracts scientifically-minded people, so we look forward to hearing your views. Do you disagree, and believe that there are critical circumstances when experiments on animals are justified? To give a recent example of important research on animals, every COVID-19 vaccine licensed for use in the UK—including Oxford/AstraZeneca, Pfizer/BioNTech, Moderna, Janssen, Novavax, and Valneva—underwent animal testing during development.
Some of the attendees may argue that experiments are justified if it helps cure human diseases, so could be a great way to discuss animals as commodities and educate them about the progress being made in humane research.
There is also a clear ‘call to action’ in that we can buy cruelty-free products and maybe even get involved with Animal Aid’s campaigns to end animal testing. It’s quite a good time for this as the Government has promised to create a road map to phase out animal testing in the UK, and there are lots of ways that people can help keep the pressure up!
Antonia will be showing a film called the Future of Science as part of the presentation . A worthwhile evening full of controversial debate.
If you have teenage children or grandchildren studying science in Years 10/ 11 – there are most welcome to attend.
Animal Aid is an animal rights organisation that has been around since the seventies:

We believe this can be delivered through powerful public engagement, political and legal action, and compassionate education.”
